RotoKey is our simplified way of saying Rotoscoping and Keying, the process of cutting an image out from it's background, so that it can be put on a different background. Chroma Keying, Luminance Keying, Green Screen, Blue Screen, Matting, and Rotoscoping that all fall under RotoKey.
In out pipeline we separate RotoKey it into three stages, RotoKey Ingest, Β RotoKey Primary, and Rotokey Utility.
RotoKey Utility and Rotokey Primary are Imported and Exported in the ACEScg color space. Refer to our guide on how to set up ACEScg in your program before you begin.
There may be some terminologies that you are not familiar with.
A list of common terms is available in the Common Terminologies page.Β
The Compositing Supervisor oversees the team.
The Technical Director oversees documentation and assists the team.
The first stage of the Rotoscope and Keying Pipeline is Ingest RotoKey. It covers:Β
Quality Control of Stop Motion Footage
Raw Image Development and Tif Export
Color Space Corrections
File Organization
This first stage is generally handeled by a Supervisor or the Technical Director.
The RotoKey Ingested footage is passed to RotoKey Primary. This is where actual Keying and Rotoscoping takes place. Tasks done in this step include:
Keying
Rotoscoping
Removing Color Spill
Exporting Image Sequences
If there are additional production needs, this will be done in the RotoKey Utility stage. The tasking can be varied, and every stop motion shot might not need it. It can include:
Processing and Exporting Relight Utility Passes
Creating RGB mattes for Image Sequences
Setting up Clean Plates
We are generally flexible on the software used, but there are some requirements.
You must be able to export your work at Full Native Resolution
You must be able to export a TIF Image Sequence at a depth of 16bit Half Float / Float Β in AE (Float+ with Alpha)
(not required for RotoKey Utility)
You must be able to read and export the Color Space ACEScg
NOTE: SOME SOFTWARES HAVE RESOLUTION CAPS - Check the Software Recommendations Page to learn more.
If you are using a software that can not reach the native image resolutions, notify a Director / Supervisor to be re-tasked, Request to Rent a Remote Desktop to access software with uncapped resolutions, or ask the Technical Director for training on other uncapped software.
